“The Big Bang Theory” was the most popular free online TV show in Canada in November 2011. The show captured a 2.6% viewership share of all free TV shows viewed online during this period. Among other top ten online shows were “Grimm” and “Terra Nova” in sci-fi & fantasy; “2 Broke Girls”, “Modern Family”, “Family Guy” and “How I Met Your Mother” in comedy; “Criminal Minds” in drama; and “Ancient Aliens” in history. As a whole the top ten shows captured a roughly 12% share, and the top twenty shows captured a roughly 20% share of all show views.
Notable Canadian entries (Canadian content “CanCon” as defined by CRTC) in the top twenty were “American Dad” (the only Canadian show in the top ten) and “New Girl”, although both were unfortunately dropping in popularity. Interestingly the popular Canadian cable TV drama “Flashpoint” did not make it to online top twenty.
Comparing to October 2011, some of the bigger losers were “Fringe” (dropping from #2 to #11), “House” (dropping from #5 to #14), and “New Girl” (dropping from #10 to #19). “Modern Family” (climbing from #9 to #3), “How I Met Your Mother” (climbing from #15 to #7), and “Ancient Aliens” (climbing from #13 to #8) were rising in popularity. Notably the new sci-fi & fantasy shows “Grimm” and “Once Upon A Time” made strong debuts straight to top twenty. Three older shows “Criminal Minds”, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, and “Doctor Who” had a strong November, rising to the top twenty. Also, just to prove the resilience of good-old programming in modern online TV, “The Young & The Restless” can now be found at spot #17 (and “Coronation Street” is not far behind outside top twenty).
